I have spent the last few days having my brain eaten by Havemercy, the first book by Jaida Jones (
ladyjaida, she of Shoebox notoriety) and Dani Bennett (
danibennett). Most of you have already experienced me metaphorically shoving this book at your faces, but I felt compelled to make a post about it, because, OH MY GOD.
Also, you all need to read it as of yesterday. Here is a summary I wrote, ganked from a comment in
sophieisgod's journal:
This book is literally the only thing I have been able to think about since I read it, like, a month ago, and I can't start talking about it too much because in one of the comments I left someone about it I exceeded the LJ comment character limit by, like, a lot (e.g. the limit is 4300, I used 12,560). The really really condensed version of the plot is that the Volstov and Ke-Han empires have been at war for a while, only right now there's a kind of peace/lull, in which two scandals happen in the main city of Thremedon: one is that the most unruly/rebellious member of the Dragon Corps, a group of 14 men who fly metal dragons made by magicians as part of the Volstov defences, insults a neighbouring country's diplomat's wife and as such, the Dragon Corps are monitored by a 'Versity (the equivalent of a university) student who is supposed to give them 'sensitivity' training at the same time as observing their behavior in the Airman (the building they all live in) for his thesis, and, two, that the Margrave Royston ('Margrave' meaning a magician who has served the Esar, the ruler, well in a time of war) is found to be having a homosexual relationship with a prince of a neighbouring country - a country which does not allow homosexuality, and thus Royston is banished from Thremedon to stay with his brother in the country, where he meets Hal, a country boy who loves to read. PHEW. However, there's more to the war than meets the eye immediately, and the book, told from four alternating POVs - Royston, Hal, Rook (the headstrong airman) and Thom (the 'Versity student), explores the war and the relationships between the main characters, and it is basically amazing.
AND I HAVEN'T EVEN MENTIONED THE OTHER MEMBERS OF THE DRAGON CORPS, HOW REMISS OF ME - they are like a big gang of idiots with horrifically strong personalities, all thrown together and told to get along, and, er, this does not work. AND I LOVE THEM.
TL;DR: SHORT VERSION - GAY MAGICIANS AND METAL DRAGONS. READ IT NOWWW. It takes a bit longer to get into than some books do, but this is because you are immediately introduced to four different characters who have four different ways of looking at the world, and knowledge about the world, and so the first few chapters are quite heavy on the confusion/world-building factors, but, honestly, it is so good that that doesn't seem to matter.
AND ROYSTON IS MY FAVOURITE.
READ ITTTT.
A big thanks goes to
twicetheheart31 who has been joining me in writing epically long comments about this book, and to whom I say BALFOURRRRR, because I am re-reading it now and HIS GLOVES. Oh, hey, do some of you not know what I'm talking about? READ THE BOOK.
No, no, I will not stop talking about this book until everyone I know has read it.
Moving on: icon meme time! I have two of these to do, and another cold, wth body, and so this seemed like the right day to play.
MAH ICONS.
HOW MANY ICONS DO YOU HAVE: Right now, 86.
OUT OF HOW MANY AVAILABLE ICONS SPACES: 113, but only for, like, another few weeks, and then I will go back to having 30 out of 30 available icon spaces. It was fun while it lasted! (Er, this isn't one of those things, where, like, I say I haven't got [blank] on lj and then some anonymous person gets it for me, akjhdjakhd, I am rubbish at communicating)
IF YOU COULD BUY SPACE FOR MORE, WOULD YOU: ALL YES, ALL THE TIME.
DO YOUR ICONS MAKE A STATEMENT: That.. I am ridiculous, I like nice colouring and textless icons unless they're a quote icon, and, er, I am still ridiculous?
WHAT FANDOM DO YOU HAVE THE MOST ICONS OF: Harry Potter (including Shoebox icons)
AND THE SECOND MOST: The League of Gentlemen jadkjagdjagd
WHAT SHIP DO YOU HAVE THE MOST ICONS OF: I... don't tend to have ship icons? Or at least, I don't seem to have many in this batch. Or, okay, having just had another look, I have one icon in a few ships, if that makes sense? Like, for each ship I have one, maybe two icons. But they're all spread out! I have two icons of Holmes and Watson that I can take or leave as being shippy, much like I can take their relationship as is in canon or I can slash them, and, er, I have one Sam/Gene, which, again, I can take either way. OH HANG ON, most of my Shoebox icons are between Remus and Sirius, even if they're not overtly shippy, so my answer to that question is SHOEBOX, because it/everything is a ship I believe in.
ARE YOUR ICONS MADE MOSTLY BY OTHER PEOPLE: A big, big yes. I used to make more before I got this Mac, for which I have no editing software.
DO YOU MAKE ICONS: I did (and would still do, had I got something to make them with).
ARE THEY ANY GOOD: Er. Well, I use them, but I wouldn't make a post of them - they can be a bit hit and miss, you know?
ANIMATED ICONS ARE: AWESOME, but then when I use them, they annoy me. I like looking at ones that other people have!
Coding can be found here
Some notes: my favourite icon changes, like, hourly; I am aware that is not the meaning of animated that was meant, but I don't have any animated-in-that-sense icons; choosing these was a wrench - for saddest icons, it was so nearly this one -
- and this indecision happened a couple of times, so if you really want to know my other choices for whichever category, do ask (er, that is, if anyone is still reading this: I expect not, because, damn, this is a lot of irrelevancy) etc etc.
And this one too:
1. Reply to this post, and I will pick six of your icons.
2. Make a post (including the meme info) and talk about the icons I chose.
3. Other people can then comment to you and make their own posts.
4. This will create a never-ending cycle of icon glee.

Okay, so this is an illustration of Lucifer Box, the main character in the Lucifer Box series (surprisingly) by Mark Gatiss. He is a secret agent for His/Her Majesty's Secret Service. He starts off as a young Edwardian spyyy, in The Vesuvius Club, and in the sequel, The Devil In Amber, it is the thirties and Lucifer is middle-aged and having to come to terms with the fact that he isn't the Hot Young Thing in the agency anymore, and then in Black Butterfly, it is the fifties (-ish) and Lucifer is an old man (which, by the by, upset me so much more than was actually reasonable) and dealing with, in Gatiss' words, the fact that he can't think of anything worse than being 'venerable'. ALSO DID I MENTION HE IS BISEXUAL AND JUST HAS ALL THE SEX, BECAUSE HE IS AMAZING? BECAUSE THOSE ARE TRUE THINGS. One of the chapters in The Devil In Amber opens with (paraphrased) '...I left the embrace of young Rex (sucked off and buggered, if you must know)'. akjshdjkdjh LUCIFER I HEART YOU.
Er. Anyway. That's why I have that icon. Because I heart Lucifer.
2.
ajshdjkahdk ALIENNNN. Okay, so, the Alien franchise was one of my first - if not the first - big fandoms for me. I think it pre-dated The X-Files in terms of I-went-mental-over-this. I read all the websites I could find, and then that got me into really loving Sigourney Weaver, and I have this icon because it is coloured beautifully and jakshdkjhfk RIPLEY, she really made me believe that I could do something, if that makes sense? Oh strong female characters, I have always been drawn to you. Because I am ridic.
3.
LOL MERLIN. That was basically my reaction to this icon, which takes a touching scene in which life and death for Arthur and Merlin hangs in the balance and turns it into their having a date in a restaurant. Which is MORE CANON THAN ANYTHING EVER. And it made me laugh :DDD
4.
True story: I watched Finding Nemo for the first time with my dad and my step-mother, and when this scene appeared, with the WHALE NOISES, I nearly exploded from trying not to laugh out loud. It made me laugh more than anything I had seen recently (at that time), and, and, shut up, Finding Nemo is awesome.
5.
Oh, my god. The White Witch was such a massive favourite of mine growing up, and. And. Look at this icon. SHE HAS A SWORD AND A WAND AND SHE IS NOT ONLY WEARING A CHAINMAIL DRESS BUT ALSO ASLAN'S FUR, OKAY, SHE WEARS OTHER PEOPLE'S GODS BECAUSE SHE IS THAT FIERCE. I clearly don't react very rationally to this scene. I came out of the film and just babbled, "two swords, chain-mail dress," at my mother for the entire drive home. ajhskjdhjk TILDA.
6.
Because Battlestar is basically this icon but occasionally with people and space-battles. Oh centurions, you are so shiny and chromatic.
That was a lot of words about nothing! Well done good werks to me. Here are some miscellaneous words:
- Today, in an effort to provide my cold-ridden self with some good noms, I made some banana bread, only I modified the recipe to include pecans and dairy-free chocolate chunks, and it is indeed good noms. NOM NOM NOM.
- I am currently enjoying the benefits of having an 90 day free introductory period to LoveFilm, which I am abusing by using it to watch things I just wouldn't pay money for and also indulging in the fact that I am apparently entirely ridiculous and currently only want to watch ridiculous things. What I have at home right now: The Rage in Placid Lake, Wild Child and Mulan. OH YEAH, I'M COOL.
- I am pretending that if I don't think about the exams, either they won't happen or I won't freak out. Either of these two options is an acceptable outcome.
- HAVEMERCY, EVERYONE, GO AND READ IT. The paperback version comes out in July, and so does the sequel, jkadajhdjkg, I am so excited.
One last meme, edited because I have done this one a freaking zillion times, and you don't want to hear the same thing from me, like, again:
Comment on this entry, and I will:
1. Associate you with something - fandom, a song, a color, a photo, a word etc.
2. Tell you something I like about you.
3. Tell you my favorite user pic of yours.
4. Rec you something on the internets to go and look at.
5. In return, youmust can post this in your LJ, if you feel like procrastinating too.
- Let me know if you comment which (if either, or indeed, if you choose both) meme you'd like to play along with.

3. NOTORIOUSLY INDECISIVE MOOG IS INDECISIVE. ER ER ER. Currently, it would appear to be this one:
4. I don't know if you've read either of these, but Absurdly Simple (http://www.hwslash.net/content/absurdly.html) is probably the best Holmes/Watson I've read (and! Neither of them call the other 'John' or 'Sherlock', because kwjdkjbdkj I can't be doing with that), and this one (http://yuletidetreasure.org/archive/30/theunexpected.html) is of slightly worse quality but IS HURT/COMFORT and it made me go a bit wrong, so, I thought that might be relevant to your interests.
When we are in the same place again, you will have to remedy this lack of Peter Cushing knowledge in my brain, as it seems to be causing some upset about these LJ parts! Even Dean is worried (also, kajbdjkagdkj Castiel in your icons ajkbdkjad I know next to nothing about this season of SPN except that Castiel has turned up and he is really hot).

Also I have just got two books in the post and I am still fucking determined to get through fucking Birdsong at some point, which I've picked up again recently in a fit of almost angry perseverance, but at some point I will totally read that book, probably when it comes out in paperback because I am weirdly not fond of hardbacks because idk I have issues.

Right, now that is out of the way: apparently there is something missing in my life and it is Peter Cushing-shaped? idk. I WATCH QI SOMETIMES, WHEN I REMEMBER IT IS ON THE TELEVISION (admittedly this is rare, but still). Good luck with Birdsong: lololol I really must read something a bit more highbrow than YA fantasy soon, but right now, that is what I am enjoying. HAVEMERCY, THOUGH, TOTALLY AMAZING. Have I expressed that enough? I too sometimes have hardback issues, but the hardback version of this book is lovely, and I am a little bit in love with it. EVEN THE FONT, MADDIE. MAINLY I HAVE ISSUES WITH FONTS, BUT NOT THIS ONE.
MEME-TIME.
1. From now on I will always associate you with that mental weekend of no sleep and barely any sleep (like a prisoner of war camp, what) but many many fic words. AJBDABSAHBDB etc etc etc. The relief when we had sent that thing to Loz and finally collapsed with pizza and Derren on the laptop and still no sleep; lolol realising we had not had anything to eat for about 18 hours and still determining to finish the fic first. Good times!
2. Maddie, you are just one of my favourite peoples, for srs. You make me smile! You are so easy to be around, which is brilliant, and, er, you have really awesome hair. OH YEAH, I CAN COMPLIMENT PEOPLE WITHOUT SOUNDING LIKE A TWONK (faaaaaaaail).
3. LOOOOOOOL, how badly have I failed at selecting just one icon of yours before? Quite epically, I seem to remember. LET'S GIVE THIS A GO THEN. RIGHT, I AM GOING OUT ON A LIMB AND SAYING THIS ONE:

4. Letters to a Dead man (http://community.livejournal.com/sirius_loving/10505.html) is a three-part Remus/Sirius bit of fanart that is simultaneously one of the most heart-breaking and up-lifting things I have seen on the internets. I can't read it too often, or it makes me cry. I LOVE IT TO PIECES, THOUGH. And, as a bonus - because it is by the same artist as that comic - this (http://nassima.livejournal.com/32839.html) is quite possibly my favourite R/S drawing. One of them, at least!

And I'd also like to check out these Lucifer Box books (but I also think I'd be unreasonably upset by the aging thing).
3. ...I swear there was a 3...How about: ARGH LATIN ARGH. I had a mock Literature paper yesterday (I don't think it went very well - 'How does Virgil give a lively account of the relationship between gods and warriors in this section?' WTF LIVELY? WTF.) and have a mock Unseen Translation on Tuesday. ARGH.

Date: 2009-04-27 03:16 pm (UTC)I just had the BEST DAY because in double English we got to watch Blackadder Goes Fourth because it counts as part of our WW1 Literature syllabus and our teachers had to moderate Year 12 coursework. :D Except this was counteracted by the fact that OMG THE LATIN LIT PAPER HAS TWO CONTEXT QUESTIONS, I DID NOT KNOW THIS, DAMN DAMN DAMN. (Does this make me incredibly thick? The other four people in my class had no clue there was two either; our teacher never made that clear and never gave us a whole paper at once before today... :S) Um um yes, I can totally gain 18 marks in 15 minutes...
:S:S:S:S:S:S
...Sorry for giving you even more rambling to read and reply to! :P

Date: 2009-04-27 03:29 pm (UTC)Actually, having a look at the past paper sitting on my sofa, I think I did know this but had, er, repressed the memory. OH MY GOD, I AM SO SO SCREWED FOR ALL MY EXAMS, I CANNOT EVEN EXPRESS IT. I CAN'T REALLY EAT AT THE MOMENT BECAUSE OF THE LEVEL OF STRESS. AKJDSJHAGDJHG GODDDD, WHY ISN'T IT ALL OVER YET?
Do you know what I am looking forward to at the end of these freaking exams? Sleep. And being able to think about food without wanting to vomit. And sleep. AND GUILT-FREE FREE-TIME. ajhdjksh
(icon meme coming up sometime today!)
HAVEMERCY IS SO WORTH. DO YOU WANT ME TO SPOUT OFF MORE REASONS WHY YOU SHOULD BUY IT? BECAUSE I WILL. Also, if you buy it now, you can help me slowly go mental until the summer when the sequel comes out!

Date: 2009-04-27 07:19 pm (UTC)1. I found you through your Mac/Guy fics, and then when I came to your journal for a little look, YOU TOOK LATIN, AND WERE MY AGE, and really that meant that I had to friend you or in fact cease to exist.
2. You make me happy! This may sound a bit ridiculous, but your entries/comments just seem so cheerful and energetic that you make me smiiiiile, and also you are a wonderful person to talk to, and you are always there, and you LET ME TALK TO YOU ABOUT DIDO AND AENEAS, ENDLESSLY, WITHOUT AN ACTUAL END. This is the mark of a true friend.
3. (bear in mind I am rubbish, and this selection is prone to change, like, daily, so this is just what grabbed my eye scrolling through your userpics today)
4. ER ER ER, IDK, HANG ON. Here (http://www.starfightercomic.com/menu.html), a REALLY REALLY GAY webcomic with FIGHTER PILOTS AND GAY SEX, okay, massively massively NSFW or, indeed, where other people can see. BUT SO WORTH IT, GIVE ME YOUR THOUGHTS. It is a work-in-progress, but still abdjhvdjs-worthy so far!
HERE ARE SOME OTHER THOUGHTS:
- HAVEMERCY IS NECESSARY FOR YOUR LIFE
- Blackadder in school, whatttt. Which episode was it? I heart that season!
- Lucifer Box! He's awesome. You should definitely check the books out, and just stop after The Devil In Amber if you want to avoid Tragic Aging Times (akjbdkjb SO UPSETTING)

Date: 2009-04-28 02:09 pm (UTC)I fail my A-Levelit goes away. :D- I'M GLAD I MAKE YOU HAPPY. :D <33333333
- I may order Havemercy during study leave, because right now I have nooooo time to read it because of WWI literature and driving and general other work which I must do or fail at life. :(
- We watched the first two episodes and the last one, and now I'm reading Blackadder/Darling slash (what little there is of it), God help me. :P
*goes to look at gay webcomic*

Date: 2009-04-28 02:25 pm (UTC)- Havemercyyy! It will definitely bring you joy, should you order it during study leave, because, despite its few flaws, it is LOVELY and also I wept my way through the last third of it, not because of any particular plot reason or anything, but because I was so in love with the world and the characters, and apparently my love occasionally manifests itself as tears? idek.
- WHERE IS THE BLACKADDER/DARLING SLASH I NEED IT.
ps: are you going to any kind of Classics summer school this year?
no subject
Date: 2009-04-28 06:13 pm (UTC)- Ok, this Blackadder/Darling fic, Spectacularly Badly Wrong, is absolutely BRILLIANT, and here is a page of fic which is also pretty good. :D
- HOLY SHIT, THAT WEBCOMIC WAS EXPLICIT.
- ...HOW COULD THEY LEAVE IT THERE HOW I NEED TO KNOW WHAT HAPPENS NEXT TO CAIN AND ABEL.
p.s. Noooo, I am not going to any summer school this year, but I'm thinking about going to JACT next year. :)

Date: 2009-04-28 07:26 pm (UTC)- Well, between Shoebox and those fics, I've got my evening sorted! Just what I need after too much French.
- IKR. But! I need to know what happens next too! It's an ongoing thing though, so we should find out soon. ♥
ps: WHYYY not this year DDD: I am going to the JACT Greek summer school in August, because Cambridge said I had to if I want to go there. I'm thinking it won't be going to the summer school that will be a problem, it will be not failing my exams ajkbdjhsgfjh
BUT WE SHALL NOT TALK OF THAT.
pps: NO, REALLY, TWO UNSEENS IN AN HOUR AND A HALF? 45 MINUTES PER UNSEEN? NO.

Date: 2009-04-29 04:05 pm (UTC)- Ohhh, Greek summer school sounds good. Go to one next year too, then we can spend a WHOLE WEEK/10 DAYS in each other's glorious company. :D
- I FORGOT YOU'RE GOING TO CAMBRIDGE. YOU SO SMART. I could never have got through the interviews, it would have devolved into incoherent rambling veeeeery quickly.
- ...I actually think I won't be able to cope with university-level Latin. Everyone will think I'm stupid. :(

Date: 2009-04-29 04:30 pm (UTC)- THIS IS A PLAN. We should both apply next year, and then it will be awesome.
- I ONLY HAVE A CONDITIONAL OFFER, I AM PROBABLY GOING TO END UP IN HULL AFTER FAILING MY A-LEVELS. Where are you off, my sweet? I forget, because I am a fail. My interview did in fact dissolve into incoherent flailing - or, at least, the one that didn't make me want to kill myself did (the one where I had to actually translate Latin in front of the Most Terrifying Man Alive was so awful. So. Awful.), and also I think I might have mentioned my deep and abiding hatred for Odysseus, but then I moved on.
- I am terrified of the thought of university Latin, but also weirdly excited? AS LONG AS IT IS NOT A) LIVY OR B) CAESAR, I AM HAPPY.

Date: 2009-04-29 09:44 pm (UTC)- TIS A PLAN INDEED.
- PFFFT, I SAY, PFFFFFFFFFFFFT, YOU WILL GO TO CAMBRIDGE OR I WILL EAT...SOMETHING VERY UNPLEASANT OF YOUR CHOICE. I'm going to Warwick!
- I'm sort of getting into Livy now? Idek, maybe I've just gone mad and delusional...
- LOLOLOLOLOL AT YOUR ICON.

Date: 2009-04-29 10:06 pm (UTC)- PLANNN, we can has it/
- I WILL HOLD YOU TO THAT. COME AUGUST 20TH, YOU WILL EAT THOSE WORDS. Possibly literally, only it might not be quite fair of me to make you eat your computer.
- I hate Livy, if only because a) I associate him with the comprehension papers DDD: and b) STOP TALKING ABOUT WARS, FFS. If I have to read one more thing in which people are lead out of a camp, stand around a bit and then go back inside, I will scream.
- HAVE YOU READ GROWING UP CULLEN? YOU MUST. IT IS HILARIOUS.

Date: 2009-04-30 03:19 pm (UTC)- I AM RUNNING OUT OF THINGS TO SAY ABOUT THIS PLAN...PLAAAAAAAAAAAAANPLAN-YPLANPLAN. YAY. :D
- SHHHH YOUR FACE. But ok, I will stick to my promise.
- I got the results of the unseens we did! 83/90 for Livy (though this was most likely an AS Livy, according to my teacher) and an embarrassing 64/90 for Ovid - though overall I just scraped an A...Oh, dear...
- NO NO WHAT IS THIS THING? Does it require knowledge of the last two books? Because I've only read Twilight and New Moon. :)
no subject
Date: 2009-04-30 03:42 pm (UTC)- THE PLAN NEEDS NO WORDS. THE PLAN IS COMPLETE AS IT IS!
-Wow, well done! Your unseen prowess is impressive! I just looked at the mark scheme for that hideous, hideous comprehension paper, and, ahahaha, I will be lucky to get any marks. At all. Oh, how I look forward to explaining that to my teacher.
- Here (http://oxymoronassoc.livejournal.com/tag/creative:+growing+up+cullen) are all the entries for Growing Up Cullen, and here (http://oxymoronassoc.livejournal.com/462027.html)is the first one. It's a series of IM conversations posted up on LJ in which Edward Cullen is prissy and irritated by everything, and it is so, so funny. I don't think you need knowledge of the last two books - I mean, there might be a couple of plot things mentioned, I don't remember, but, er, mainly it is about Edward being a douche, and lololol forever.
