I was watching Green Wing today. (What follows has spoilers for, er, the whole shebang, just to warn people who are staying away from GW spoilers for whatever reason).
And I was thinking, you know, Mac/Caroline is just the pairing. I mean, it's the pairing you watch that makes you sit up a bit and clutch your hands together and squeak when anything looks remotely likely, it's the pairing that makes you go all incoherant and rubbishy when there's kissing, or looking, or touching, it's the pairing that makes you cry at all the kissing (hormonal today, sorry), and go all flaily at the looove.
But it's also the pairing that sodding hurts the most, you know? Just, just, every time you think something's finally going right, there's always something to get in the way. I was watching the Holly episodes today, and I forget which episode it's in, but, but, when Caroline's waiting at Mac's (ridiculously nice) home for him and then he turns up with Holly and the kid, and she's mortified and he's that mixture of angry and defeated and doing-the-right-thing, because that's what he does, and she leaves without even taking his jacket, and he sits on the edge of the pool table and is very quiet, and, and, I just, I can't watch that scene too much.
Also, I can't watch the season 2 finale at all, and the special hurts me too, and so I have to stop at 2x07, but even then there's that dinner where Sue White just pops up and Caroline goes home and I, augh, I don't know.
But then there's Guy/Caroline, which I have annoyingly mixed feelings about. I mean, I love that Guy is just clearly so so about her, despite the initial I-will-have-her-because-I-can at the start of season one, and Caroline, well, she likes him, and she cares about him, but he's the second choice, he's always going to be the second choice, and both of them know it, which is just not healthy grounds for any relationship, not when she's always going to be thinking 'what if I was with Mac' and he's always going to be wondering if she would rather be with Mac, and both of them knowing that if Mac suddenly became an option...he would be the option, insomuch as there wouldn't even be a choice to really consider.
So that's always the painful bit to Guy/Caroline, but the way Caroline just gives in to it, knowing that at least there's something to be had rather than the eternal maybe with Mac and the way Guy keeps going after it, knowing that he;s never really going to be the one she really wants, that makes it all so much more painful to watch than if you were just seeing it as another obstacle to Mac/Caroline.
And then, and then, there's Mac/Guy, which...in the programme, not so much blatant slashy canon as undertones of slash but the friendship, that completely cracked out, dependent, bantering, competitive, understanding of a friendship that both of them take so completely for granted because they can, you know, it's not like either of them is actually going to walk away from it, and it just, augh, I don't know.
All of this in a comedy.
Aha, look at me over-thinking - well, I say 'thinking', I actually mean 'typing complete bollocks when I should be getting an early night', but there we go.
Oh, right, and I wanted to talk about the kissing (as one does).
Well, no, that's a bit of a lie, I wanted to talk about the Mac/Caroline kisses.
Every single one (and seriously without exception, because I am a sappy sap mcsap pants) has made me go 'oh!' and then go all squeaky with love. They're always so...so...unexpected, even when there's build-up, like leaning in or something, and they just seem so heartfelt, you know, there's nothing forced or ambiguous about them. It's like they know something's going to happen afterwards, like Mac suddenly remembering his inability to express himself ever, or Sue White, or accidental incest at Guy's, or Holly the Baby-Killer re-appearing with oodles of crazy, or unexpected fatal diseases with an 'a' and an 'e' in, or sudden Guy-in-nice-person shocker, or, you know, something, and so there's always that touch of melancholy, or, or, resignation to them along with all the sweet, romantic, surprise kissing aspect, and, and, eeeeee.
Oh, and if you forced me to pick a Mac/Caroline kiss, I know which one I'd choose. Not the party kiss (although eeeeeee a lot there, clearly) and not the one in 1x09 (yaye shadows) or the post-proposal one, or the one in 2x08 (tainted with OH NOES MAC JUST PLEASE GO TO THE TRAIN STATION panic there, I'm afraid), for me, it's the one in 2x05, before Holly the Baby-Killer suddenly has Unexpected Fake-Sprog-of-Mac's-Loins, the one that Caroline prefaces with 'what's a proper kiss then?' and Mac just grabs her and afbjhfbghngbgxsjhb.
That one.
I'll shut up now, having bored you all to death. Here, have some pictures (I have discovered a shameful bias towards Mac/Guy in my picture choices. In that I only have a group shot that has Caroline in. Oops.)

Er, in non-Green Wing related stuff:
- I have a tub of Ben and Jerry's 'Half Baked' ice-cream in the freezer, waiting for me.
- My mother bought me the first season of Grey's Anatomy (my guilty pleasure show, shh) on dvd, which I shall watch with the aforementioned ice-cream
- Tomorrow, I attempt to make an omelette for dinner.
- Does anyone know why the UK and the US differ on the length of Grey's Anatomy's first season? The US sells it as nine episodes long (the original first season) while the UK sticks the first five episodes of the second season in the first season boxset. Hmmm.
- ED BYRNE ON MOCK THE WEEK AGAIN THIS THURSDAY.
- You remember those fic requests you all made back in June? Yeah, I'm going to try and get through those before next Friday, so keep an eye out!
- I'm going to try and re-vamp this journal over the next week, in that I want to have a header, damn it, and I've got the time on my hands this week to try and make that happen. Any tips/advice?
PS: MAC IS PRETTY.

And I *flail* SO MUCH over all you say about Green Wing.
"GAS HER, FUCKER."
And tomorrow you might get a proper comment from me on this entry. Or one that's as proper as you'll ever get from moi.

Date: 2007-08-25 11:27 pm (UTC)I have to say, the series one finale shadowkiss is probably the ultimate one for me, because... I don't know why, I have to think about this, actually. Thing is, the wait between series one and series two was so long--like, a year and three fucking months, seriously--that the whole of series one almost feels like folklore to me, I watched it so many times, utterly ingrained it into my brain, and so the kiss in the final episode seems like the complete climax of everything ever. If that makes any sense. Which it really doesn't but NEVER MIND.
And, as narrow-minded as it undoubtedly sounds, I... just never really considered Guy/Caroline to be a serious thing, at all, I suppose, right up to the end of series two, because I was so completely Mac/Caroline focussed and had been for so long. Looking back across the series now, it makes more sense, but it never really entered into my personal canon.
Mac/Guy for me was a somewhat unexpected and full-on smack in the face of new-pairing-love towards the end of series two, because, again, I just never ever considered anything past Mac/Caroline. I always loved them as a double act, though, and I suppose by the beginning of 2006 I'd properly developed into a slasher, and so it all kind of fell into place.
I haven't really thought about Green Wing properly in a long time. I'm getting serious flashbacks of intense feelings here, I'll tell you, which is probably why I am apparently not shutting up, right, sorry.
Re making an omelette: IF ME AND LOZ CAN DO IT PURELY WITH WILLPOWER AND A SONIC SCREWDRIVER, THEN BY GOD ANYONE CAN.
ALSO ED BYRNE WHAT WHAT IS HE BACK WHATTTT OMG

Date: 2007-08-26 03:09 pm (UTC)Anyway.
I... just never really considered Guy/Caroline to be a serious thing, at all - No, no, I see what you mean. The thing is, I did, but I didn't want it to be, if that makes sense. Like, I could see what the intent behind it was, but I vehemently didn't like it. It made me swear and shout at the screen, even though I love Guy and I love Caroline, and I love the kissing in any form with the characters I love, but...just...the only kissing that was right was Mac/Caroline, and I can never really find the words to express just how much that pairing makes me ache. A lot. I love them. Mac/Caroline 4 Eva, etc.
I saw 2x08 first (ahaha, lol, I am so weird) but I hadn't seen GW before that, so it was more like watching a cracked out sketch show than anything else, and I was only half paying attention, but even then when Guy showed up at the train station and not Mac there was this palpable ouch, and then the next thing I saw was the special, this Christmas, and I just...fell in love, hard, and then I bought the two seasons and watched it in the proper, linear, way, and even though I knew Mac and Caroline ended up together, I...I don't know, it didn't help with all the interruptions, because they make me saaaad.
Er, no, the point of explaining in which order I saw Green Wing things was to say that I was pretty much on the look-out for Mac/Guy stuff after the bar scene, because ow my heart, but in the fun way, you know, like a bonus thing, because nothing could detract from the yearning after Mac/Caroline.
CHRIST MOOG STFU NOW.
Er, except I have to say SHADOWKISS. I love shadowkiss. It makes me cry. Actually, any time they kiss, I cry. I AM A SAP OF A PERSON. There's just something so yearn-y about them, and I just want them to be together so much that whenever there's kissing, I am a mushperson.
MY ITALICS CONVEY THINKING THOUGHTS.
I shall keep you informed re: omelette success!
AND YES, ED IS BACK THIS WEEK. GLEEEEEE.

DEAR LORD, I COULD NOT CARE LESS. I think Guy/Caroline is unobjectionable and even quite sweet at many times, but I utterly LOATHE Mac/Caroline.
I...just...want it to die a painful death. It ANNOYS me.
Mostly I live in a Mac/Guy fantasy-land. THEY BE MY GW OTP.
