moogingFINALLY. Good God, this post is about, what, two or three weeks behind? Argh. Here I go blathering about OotP film, with two quite vague references to Deathly Hallows but no out-and-out spoilers. Allusions, that's the word. A touch tl;dr, I apologise.
So, I'm glad about that because OotP is my favourite of the books. Please, for the love of God, someone come and talk to me about the film in the comments? I might die otherwise. My mother has passed her capacity to listen to me go GAY GAY GAY HOTTTT, and I have not surpassed my capacity of screeching, and dear Lord, I might have to go and see it a third time.
Oh, we also went to see the Simpsons Movie on the spur of the moment, afterwards, and I enjoyed it much more than I expected to - it did hold up quality on the big screen, and it did make me laugh, which is really all I wanted.
All in all, AWESOME DAY THANKS. How are you all? Thanks for putting up with my Potter explosion ;)
First of all, I have to start by saying GARY OLDMAN JESUS CHRIST SO ATTRACTIVE. I've had a thing for him, like, since I've had eyes, and he was retina-scorchingly living up to that expectation here. *collapses*
Right, okay, I'm going to do this in bullet points because I have no idea what might come out of my brain (ahaha, and this is after my second viewing - first time round I was pretty much only capable of mouthing like a fish and going AHBHVCVHBJIBEUIGQW!!!! a lot, so, er, I'll try to do better than that this time round.
- REALLY THOUGH GARY OLDAMN* SO HOT.
- I wanted more Lupin. That, I feel, would have been an improvement. More Lupin. It amused me that his character in the film was either Gay Remus, Gay Remus, Exposition Remus, Heroic Remus or Grieving Remus, and he had, what, five, six lines of dialogue? BUT THERE WAS THE BIG GAY SHOT OF LEANING IN THE DOORWAY AND ALL IS FORGIVEN.
- Ooh, yes, and when Harry first got to Grimmauld Place and you saw the meeting going on through the door, Sirius totally had his arm round Remus, Y/Y? Y.
- All the Sirius-Harry hugs made me go all lump-in-the-throat. WHY DIE, SIRIUS? WHYYYY?
- Actually, particularly the hug in the tapestry room, because the look on Harry's face, and the way they were so close and that coming straight after 'when this is over, we'll be a proper family', I, I, I just...eeeeeeep. *flails*
- 'Nice one, James!' - MY HEART CANNOT TAKE THIS LEVEL OF PAIN, PEOPLE.
- Dumbledore: right, well, I have mixed feelings about Michael Gambon as Dumbledore (mainly STOP SHOUTING RIGHT NOW), but after Deathly Hallows and that bit into his past, I'm definitely warmer to him. He seems like someone who has reached those levels of Manipulative-In-Your-Face Yet Wise Old Crazy Man the tough way and is still a bit raw from it, and, yes, I think I liked Michael Gambon in this film. Which is definitely not what I was saying after seeing Goblet of Fire, let me tell you. Not at all (why yes, random Harry-strangling, I am referring to you).
- I thought the sets were several kinds of amazing, let me say. Grimmauld Place and the Ministry Hall in particular were stupendously gorgeous.
- Emma Watson seems to have toned down Eyebrows! Attack! for which I am most grateful. Rupert Grint has stopped gurning, and has lines that are not comic relief rubbish, and he's definitely the better for it. I actually liked him in this film. He was sweet and, and, yes.
- Daniel Radcliffe! He didn't make me cringe once! This is a first! I thought he actually did really well through this film, no, shh, I really do. He impressed me. He captured the OotP-Harry in a way I didn't think he'd be able to do, and there were a few scenes (again, the scene in the tapestry room with Sirius, seeing the vision of Sirius in the Department of Mysteries, aaaaaall the scenes in the Department of Ministries, and a few others) that really stood out for me. And the Obligatory Harry Has a Nightmare scenes were well done, I felt, as opposed to nnnnnngh (shh, that's a word) as they have been.
- Oh oh oh, I really had to struggle not to completely embarrass myself when the montage of 'look Harry, you do have friends, you lonely sad boy!' was going on at the end, because I AM A SAP SHUT UP.
- Allll the montages were several shades of awesome, I thought. Very very yaye.
- I HAVE BEEN SINGING THAT UMBRIDGE THEME ALL DAY NOW SOMEONE STOP ME.
- Is it just me, or is film-Trelawney different from book-Trelawney? Film-Trelawney seems quite meek and easily hurt, whereas book-Trelawney comes across as more proud-haughty-highstrung than that. This is not to say I didn't like Emma Thompson's performance. Because I did. Because I love her. *clings*
- I AM GOING TO PENETRATE YOU....r mind AHAHAHAHA!
- Why was there not more of the Marauders Are Wonderment On Toast scene? Do we think there will be a longer version of this on the dvd? I WANT TO SEE MORE MARAUDER INTERACTION, DAMN IT. Although I thought young!Snape was good, as were the bits of Mauraders I could see, before the SCENE ENDED.
- The scene with Umbridge and McGonagall on the stairs with the stepping up and down the stairs was geeeenius.
- I thought the film did a really good job of capturing the whole 'Harry feels alone' theme without smushing it in our faces - I mean, yes, it was emphasized a lot, but that didn't feel too much, you know?
- 'But you were unsuccessful?' 'Obviously.' ILU SNAPE.
- Also, is it just me or has Alan Rickman lost weight? I don't care either way, as he is awesomeness on legs, but I just thought...never mind, shut up, Moog. He continues to rule all as Snape.
- Imelda Staunton was also a very good Umbridge, despite me being quite sceptical before seeing the film. SO PINK PINK IN MY FACE.
- ARGH all the 'Dumbledore won't look at Harry' things hurt me, because I have such, such an easily wounded part of me for their relationship. Why yes, Half-Blood Prince did dissolve me into a pool of mush. I don't quite know how I'm going to cope when that film's out. BADLY, I feel. Someone that understands (i.e. - one of you) will have to come with me, so that I am not mocked for leaving the cinema as a wreck of a person.
- THAT SCENE IN DUMBLEDORE'S OFFICE AFTER HARRY SAW MR. WEASLEY ATTACKED OH GOD MY ME. The look Dumbledore gave Harry after the 'LOOK AT ME' was painful in my squishy soft sappy place in my heart. *sobs like a child*
- Really, I was impressed by DanRad's performance this time round. Hurrah. This bodes well for the last two films.
- What else did I want to say?
- Fred and Georrrrrrge! You win at liiiiiife!
- I thought the screenwriter did an excellent job of converting Longest Book Ever into a watchable, understandable film. Joy.
- Okay, I have some niggles too:
: If you're going to have a cute kid in your film, do not make up a character when there are 700000000 billion of them in JKR's world. Pick one that already exists. A Creevey brother, perhaps. DO NOT MAKE ME LEARN MORE NAMES.
: I really do not like Neville (GASP! I hear you gasp). Shh, you know how there's that saying that we only dislike people because they remind us of parts of ourselves we also dislike? I think that's why I don't like Neville (which opened up a whole world of annoyance in Deathly Hallows, but that's another post).
- I thought that making Cho the traitor was a good idea, time vs. plot wise. It was definitely easier than having another character and having to go through the SCARRED FOR LIFE bit, and they gave understandable reasons for it, and then explained that it wasn't entirely her fault (yaye Snape, for telling Harry that when there was no actual need to say when the last bit of Veritaserum had been used as I'm sure Umbridge knew perfectly well), so, er, yes.
- CENTAURS! I loved them.
- Grawp! I was not so fond. Although I did like the whole bike-bell exchange between him and Hermione (shh, what, I AM A SECRET SAP).
- The picture of the original Order of the Phoenix! Sirius looking smug and young! Remus with long hair! James and Lily! I HEART YOU ALL.
- I didn't understand the costuming thought behind having Sirius in a dressing gown/coat with nothing underneath (that I could see, and what I could see was a lot of his chest) in the train station. Not that I'm complaining. At all.
- GAY GAY GAY REMUS AND SIRIUS ARE GAY. (Sorry about that, I seem to have exploded).
- YES that was what I meant to say. I was happyin my pants when everyone was talking at the Order table and Remus said something to the effect of 'Voldemort destroyed everything we loved' and then there was a cut to Sirius looking down all morosely YES YES YOU ARE IN HOT GAY LOVE. I was also rather partial to all the looking there was between Remus and Sirius, but that's because I LOVE THEM.
- I loved the possession scene. Loved. it got across the whole Dumbledore-Harry relationship superbly, it underscored the importance of the connection between Harry and Voldemort, it showed the importance of Harry's strength of mind and that, for the love of God, Harry, shut up and accept your friends' help. Although I think I'd try to alienate myself as well, but there we go.
- The thestrals were quite possibly the best things in the world. I loved them. I still love them. I want one (although I wouldn't be able to see it, but never mind. IT WOULD STILL LOVE ME AND I WOULD CALL IT BAMBAM).
- I would have liked to see the scene with Harry smashing the crap out of Dumbledore's office, but then I would have liked the scene we did get to have been longer. As I would have liked to have had some recognition that Ron and Hermione were made prefects. I could cope with the rest of the cuts.
The Ron-Harry relationship makes me cry too.
- Filch and his ever-growing ladder ftw!
- Good God, am I never going to shut up?
- I liked the way we swooped in and out of the pictures in the newspapers, and the whole inclusion of the newspapers to tell bits of the story, I thought that worked well. I THOUGHT IT ALL WORKED REALLY WELL.
- OH HAI WE UPGRADED YOUR DEMENTORS. Now they're even more terrifying. I really, really hate Dementors. They scare the crap out of me. *flails*
- Oh, yes, equally as subtle as the 'things we cared about - Sirius looks morose' cut was the '"There's a storm coming, Harry, and blah blah blah when she does" -SMASH CUT TO BELLATRIX".
- The head-in-the-fire effect was about a zillion times better this time round, y.n?
- Oh, right, that's the only other scene I would have liked in: where Harry's all shaken about his father's Slight Bullying Nature and goes to the floo thing to talk to Sirius and Lupin just happens to be there, like, HEY HARRY WE WERE NOT DOING GAY STRAIGHT STRAIGHT NO GROPING HERE.
- Have I mentioned that I thought Gary Oldman did an amazing job as Sirius? He was eeeeevrything you could hope for in a Sirius. Arrogant, sliiightly cruel, a bit aloof, vulnerable, proud, weathered, risk-taking LOVE LOVE SIRIUS I LOVE YOUI still love Remus a bit more.

- Hee, what really made me chuckle was Uncle Vernon mouthing 'he's not very well' when they were shoving Dudley into the car, and something he said in the house about 'finally sending him loopy'. Heeee. Also, gratuitous!Aunt-Petunia-legs!
- David Yates is clearly some sort of genius man.
- I really, really have to shut up now. I shall just say that I loved Luna, liked the DA scenes, thought the film as a whole was gorgeously shot (a must-have in a Potter film for me, I'm afraid, one of the reasons why I wasn't too fond of GoF) and, er, Ralph Fiennes was lovely too, the 'you shouldn't have come here tonight, Tom' line was well-done, Bellatrix was crazy and hot and I liked her but maybe she was a bit toooo loopy-ified, LUCIUS MALFOY BROUGHT THE SEX, 'get away from my godson - *THWACK*' made me happy in my pants, 'you've done beautifully' made me all choked up, er, er, I LOVED THE FILM I REALLY DID I'M SO HAPPY.
In conclusion, GAY GAY HAPPY HAPPY GAY AND HOT.

Date: 2007-07-31 09:16 pm (UTC)I thought that in the book, there was that slight bwuh? about Sirius's death, and then all the emotional pain and torment later, smashing stuff in Dumbledore's office, and here we kind of got the drawn-out-scream-of-anguish right there, so maybe it would have had more of an impact had the anguish been delayed until later and then straight away we focused on Harry's new found desire to go crucio Bellatrix with the Anger That Launched A Thousand Caps, maybe? I think that's why the book worked more: the WAHSIRIUS was delayed until that (bestest mcfabbypants) scene in Dumbledore's office. SHH NOW, I think too much.
I happen to think that seventies porn star suited Sirius. But then I happen to think that most things suit Gary Oldman, so I am perhaps not an unbiased person in these matters of costume ;)

I mainly thought the Special FX of the Net Curtain of D00m [and the fact Sirius just kinda walked back into it] was rubbish. I wanted more dramatic dying!
Oh, Seventies Porn Star suits Sirius [and Gary in general] marvellously. I would like to see Lucius and Sirius clothes shopping.
