So, about two weeks ago I went to see The History Boys. I've been meaning to do a review for it ever since, but somehow I've just...not. And I have been nagged to breaking point by Fran a certain person. So here we go, in bullet points for easy reading!

The History Boys

- I loved Irwin. I loved him. He was just so...perfect, what with the whole teaching-without-being-personal aspect, and teaching to pass exams whilst also teaching to pass on knowledge, if not as bluntly as Hector.

- Likewise, I wanted Dakin/Irwin to happen so incredibly badly. Watching Dakin bumble through his normal cocky persona and the insecurities he had about Irwin at the same time was wonderful, and Irwin wanting it but never quite reaching out...until that one scene, after the results, which was one of the most perfectly perfect scenes I have seen. The acting, the dialogue, the blocking...just...just...wow.

- When the motorbike went over, I was on edge...until I realised Irwin was not dead, and then I didn't mind so much. And then I felt horribly guilty afterwards.

- I want lessons like Hector's. I want them so, so badly. I want to be taught through random quotations, and guess-the-film-scenes, and piano interludes, and French revision through acting out working in a brothel.

- I understood pretty much all of the French! Without subtitles! *proud*

- I liked Frances de la Tour, and I didn't think I would. I only knew her from Harry Potter, but she was good. I need to see more films with her in.

- Oh oh oh, the scene waiting to go into the headmaster's office to be told about Hector. Oh. The interaction between Irwin and Frances de la Tour (I can't remember what her character was called), and then between Irwin and Hector...oh. *weeps* The way her voice broke, and the way Hector tried to defend himself and Irwin's eyes all just killed me into tiny Moog-pieces.

- Dakin getting Hector his job back, and historical metaphors about sex and the way they spoke to each and the way the boys were with each other, and the easy way they put up with Hector, and the trip to Fountains Abbey and the picture...ohhhh.

- I thought the ending was a bit overdone though. I could have done without a voiceover of a dead person going 'pass it on, boys, pass it on'. I get it. Thanks.

- Talking about phases with Hector. *collapses* Wonderful. As was the scene where Hector just started crying in front of the class; the way they reacted was just spot on.

- All of the boys were just note-perfect. Brilliant.

- Oh, and the scene outside with Irwin and Dakin smoking! And pulling each other into a little doorway to avoid the headmaster! The little half-smile on Irwin's face! I love him. *pets*

- I kind of want to write Irwin/Dakin now.

I'm sure I've missed tons and tons out. I want it on dvd now. *stalks amazon for pre-ordering*

There was just so much I adored about the film, and seeing the interviews at Oxford made me pine; I want to get there so badly that I almost don't want to apply, you know? In case I'm not good enough. I just...need it, I need to go there, I need to see those buildings every day, I need to be with people I can make jokes about translating the Pluperfect Tense as 'I was', I need to go there.

Also, I'm doing Charities Evening at school again this year with my friend. This means I have pictures of teachers on my computer. In particular, this means I have pictures of the two French teachers that make me weak at the knees and blush like a freak. Interested in seeings?

Picspam update: I want to do one, I really do. I'm not sure if I'll have time this week, or next. How about a picture a day next week, to make up for it?

I LOVE YOU AND I LOVE THAT I NAGGED YOU TO BREAKING POINT TO DO THIS!!!

Hee....I'm so happy.

Please write Dakin/Irwin? Oh please?

Their scenes together...were just....ohhh...wow...

I agree with all your points...apart from the ending...Oh my god I love the ending...*puts 'I saw the play and it was different' head on*...in the play Hector doesn't say the 'Pass it on boys' bit when he's alive, only at his funeral...I kind of preferred it that way, I have to say. Although the echoing was nice in the film...

Did you laugh like a loon at the Brief Encounter bit?? I love Hector's lessons too. He is just a wonderful man.

I really could go on all night. I could!

Did you like Scripps? Jamie Parker? I love him and will be his wife one day.

Yes please to wibble worthy French teachers!!!!

3) Frances De La Tour is groovy.

4) Apply to Oxford. If you want it bad enough, try. And otherwise youwill never know.

Or y'know, St Andrews is very pretty and full of tradition and pretty darn old and small but sweet.......*cough*
