Film meme time! Snaggeded from [livejournal.com profile] cappuccinogirl

I know no-one reads these things, but never mind. Here are the questions, and then I'll answer them behind a cut, to try to entice people. Just in case anyone does read it ;)

1. Total number of films I own on dvd/video
2. Last film I bought
3. The last film I watched
4. Five films that I watch a lot/mean a lot to me

1. Total number of films I own on dvd/video:
Oh. Good. God. *goes to count* 92 dvds, 10 dvd boxsets...and then there are the videos. Which would probably kill me to count, because they're not all in one place and there are so many...so. 92 dvds. 10 dvd boxsets. (For those interested, the boxsets are:

1. Alias S1
2. Alias S2
3. Desperate Housewives S1
4. Scrubs S1
5. Scrubs S2
6. Scrubs S3
7. Charmed S1
8. Charmed S2 (Stop. Mocking. Me. I know it's crap, but it's fun crap.)
9. The West Wing S3
10. The X-Files S3 (I have allll the others on video though!)

2. Last film that I bought:
Ok, the last dvd type thing I bought was TWW S3, the last dvd thing/s that were bought for me were Scrubs S3 and Sherlock Holmes Adventures/Return (with Jeremy Brett) - people are trying to make me cope better with revising/mother starting a new job/me having to pick my sister up/etc - and the last FILM that I bought...*drum roll* was 'The Positively True Adventures of the Alleged Texas Cheerleader Murdering Mom' (for Holly Hunter...mmm.) and before that, Flashdance. Whoo!

3. Last film that I watched:
I honestly can't remember. I've not watched any films for a while, though I have been steadily watching my way through TWW S3. And House/The Closer/CSI/DH on tv. And revising. I want to watch a film now!

4 films that I watch a lot/mean a lot to me:
This may be tricky. There are films that mean a lot to me that I don't necessarily watch a lot...but hey.

Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind: I bought this for my mother, for her birthday, but she likes me to keep dvds in my boxes sometimes, so technically we share it. I watched it in my 'omgomgKateWinslet' phase, which, like everything, dulls down to just the one 'omg' and I can live without hyperventilating over things and move on to the next. Anyway. It was just so different from other films, with the colour and the twisty plot with random timelines, and stories within stories and little things that picked up again. I think what really endeared (?!) this to me, is the fact that within the memories, things change...and as the memories are being erased, Joel changes them to escape it with Clementine...and for some reason being able to change memories just stuck with me. And it's beautiful too.

Love Actually: I know it's been slated by some people and it's schmaltzy as hell in places, but it's Richard Curtis writing/directing and it has so many of the people I adore in it (Emma Thompson, for one). I can watch it at any time of the year, no matter what my mood is, and I will laugh at it and cry at it and it is perfection in a (dipped in yoghurt and chocolate sprinkles ;) ) film. Also, the dvd has the best director's commentary in the world, ever. Except maybe Emma Thompson's one on Sense and Sensibility.

Big Fish: Why this film? It's brilliant. The story is just wonderful, it's fantastical and ludicrous and dreamy all at once and it's sheer joy to watch. There isn't a bad note hit in it, even Ewan McGregor. It's shot beautifully and there are some fabulous little images in it. Everything mentioned has a purpose and things happen that are truly unexplainable. It's about discovery and belief and imagination but beyond that it's about people and change and family and it is quite simply a joy to sit and watch. With tissues. Many, many tissues.

The Remains of the Day: First of all, it's a Merchant Ivory film with Emma Thompson. Therefore, it equals love. It has Anthony Hopkins. It's about emotional repression and lost chances and unrequited yearnings and loyalty; it's shot on location, it has a perfect pace, it flows from one scene to the other without feeling the need to spell anything out for the audience, the performances are honest and bare and it ends in a way that makes it real, not a way that might warp the story.

Honourable Mentions:

Amelie
The Silence of the Lambs
Sleepy Hollow
Ed Wood
The Life of David Gale
American Beauty
8 Women
I Heart Huckabees
Dance With a Stranger
Finding Neverland
The Piano

There's more, but I don't have the time to write them down. And this is not me being 'ooh, I have to mention these films', this is me saying that these are films that have truly meant something to me, in whatever way.

That was fun...
