This barely even deserves its own post, because it is so short and also because I wrote it at like two in the morning when I'd just seen The Village and shouldn't have been writing anything, but NEVER MIND! #fandoms that make you do stupid things. YOU MAKE ME TOUCH YOUR HANDS FOR STUPID REASONS.

fandom: the social network
pairing: mark/eduardo
disclaimer: a) the village is not mine, b) based on the characters as presented in the 2010 film and not their real-life counterparts, c) I own nothing, ever.
rating: g/pg
word count: ~450
summary: the village au. Mark presses his face against Eduardo's neck, lies flush against him in Eduardo's small, narrow bed, and pretends he does not think of what may lie beyond the village boundaries.
a/n: almost unbearably pretentious! ~great life decisions~

Eduardo is the same age as Mark, but he is the schoolteacher for the youngest children in the village. He knows how to make them smile, and laugh, and how to hold the chalk so that they do not dirty their clothes. He teaches them math, simple sums and equations, and spelling, shaky, child-scrawled shapes of letters marking out love, faith, hope, taking in their chalkboards each night and returning them by morning, praiseful and encouraging.

Mark knows he has more to teach the children than Eduardo, but he also knows Eduardo is the right person to teach it.

//

They hold each other by night, when the village is silent and asleep. Mark presses his face against Eduardo's neck, lies flush against him in Eduardo's small, narrow bed, and pretends he does not think of what may lie beyond the village boundaries.

//

They are told it cannot be allowed, that beyond the village there have been men like them before, men who have longed for each other beyond the bounds of companionship, men who do not desire women in the way they are told that they ought. They are told that beyond the village, there have been such men that have fallen to vice, and who have tempted the creatures to cross the peaceful line. They are told that they cannot, and they are judged, but they are never told to stop.

//

In the dead of night, when Eduardo is silent and asleep, Mark presses his face against Eduardo's neck. "I would cross the bounds for you," he says, quiet, reverent in the still, dark room. "I would go to the towns."

//

Eduardo teaches in his classroom that the children must love above all, that love is what defines them, that the mere capacity to love elevates them above the beasts prowling the forests. He tells Mark, when they are alone, that he does not know if this is true, that when he loves, it hurts as though it is the beast and he the prey beneath it. Mark knows that he teaches the truth, for when Mark loves, when he joins his hand in Eduardo's beneath their blankets or meets his gaze by day, he feels higher than the treetops, lifted out of his skin to look down upon himself, and judge it right.

//

One night, when Mark is silent but wakeful, Eduardo presses his face against Mark's neck. "I would cross the bounds again for you," he says, roughly, wet. "I don't regret it."

Mark takes his hand under the bedclothes, and says, "I know, Wardo," and they hold on to each other until the first light of dawn.

I'm trying not to imagine the havoc Mark would wreck being his socially-stunted self with nothing to hold his attention (except Wardo) in the Village...
This was sweet, and the vagueness of the writing really fits the tone of that film.

Thank you! And, oh my god, re: Mark in the village - it would be awful. I mean, for Mark, obviously, but especially for the other people who were stuck living with him. True [but boring] story: I did wonder about making this a longer thing, but then I was like I CANNOT WRITE MARK IN THE VILLAGE, I CANNOT DO THAT TO MYSELF, IT WOULD BE TOO DEPRESSING.

Thank you! <3 You should definitely give the film a go, if only for the score. THE SCORE MADE ME SOB FOREVER. Plus, you know. Jesse's in it (super briefly!) and also Bryce Dallas Howard and Sigourney Weaver and Fran Kranz and Joaquin Phoenix. PLUS DID I MENTION THE SCORE?? There's one scene in particular that's just - hnnnng. HNNNNG. NOISES ONLY, NO WORDS, JUST TEARS.

Stunningly lovely. The Village is one of those films I rewatch every now and then, and which I unironically love, and this captures so much of the poignant fear and yet the accompanying bravery of knowing boundaries and then moving beyond them.

which I unironically love - ASKGFJHDSGF !!! hooray, I thought it was just me.

Thank you so much for your lovely comment. <333 and: the poignant fear and yet the accompanying bravery of knowing boundaries and then moving beyond them - I think this is a large part of why the film makes me cry so much. That, and the score. IVY AND LUCIUS, I WILL CRY FOREVER, THE END.

i appreciate the village much more now than when i first saw it, and you captured the quiet and the melancholy of the movie, the fear and despair, and how love gives you hope and the strength to cross boundaries, wonderfully. also, the idea of eduardo considering love to something that weighs him down, a beast and mark, something that lifts him up, almost magical, is so perfect and heartbreaking, one usually doesn't think of them that way.

This is beautiful. This makes up for how much I hated the Village when I first saw it (why couldn't it have JUST been a monster movie? it would have been such an amazing monster movie). Honestly, this makes me think, huh, maybe the Village wasn't bad after all--and I've been known to rant about the movie. So, basically, BRAVO YOU for changing my mind. :D

Also...wasn't Jesse in the Village? I'm pretty sure that's what imdb told me.

Thank you so much! <3 asgfjhgdsj and especially thank you for reading despite not liking the film so much. I think the first half of the film is much stronger than the second, and I would have enjoyed it just as much (maybe more?) if it had turned out to be a monster movie, but, idk, I think I like the idea of the reality more than the way it was executed? I DON'T KNOOOOOW, I just, I LOVE THIS MOVIE ANYWAY. #too ridiculous to be allowed.

And re: Jesse being in this movie: YES (http://moogle62.livejournal.com/116076.html#cutid1).

Date: 2011-03-23 09:11 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] moonlitelupines.livejournal.com
I completely agree with you about the whole concept vs. execution thing. I was sucked in so much and loved every minute of it up until the end when you find out that it wasn't real. I felt like the director was trying to recreated a Sixth Sense sort of twist and it felt so forced. The movie didn't need a twist--the concept alone was a enough to keep you guessing. But now I really want to watch this movie again and decide if I just didn't hate it because Adrien Brody died hahaha (this is a very big possibility seeing as I was so in love with him then)

Well, hellllooo there, Jesse! I feel like I remember him. Does he even talk?

Date: 2011-03-25 03:53 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] moogle62.livejournal.com
I remember feeling like I'd been punched in the stomach when Adrian Brody died. I think it might have been one of the first films I'd seen where one of the nice characters died? idk. It just really, viscerally, got me. HMMM HMM HMMM. You should totally see it again! Jesse has a few lines, and a fair bit of background acting - his character is sort of one of the young men in the village that are basically there to be familiar faces reacting to stuff/showing every day life/attitudes in the village - at one bit Ivy's talking about the game the boys play where they put their backs to the woods and see who can stay there the longest without getting scared, and we see Jesse's character doing this and basically being TERRIFIED OUT OF HIS MIND, and then he turns up in the group scenes, and to impart a few expository lines here and there, and also TO BE ADORABLE WITH FRAN KRANZ, the end.

And I did think the reveal of the twist was super heavy-handed, even back then at like 13/14. CLEARLY THAT SHOULD BE A SIGN SOMETHING WAS WRONG, I WAS NOT THE MOST DISCERNING 13/14 YEAR OLD.

OH HE'S ONE OF THE BOYS PLAYING THAT WOODS GAME? I AM ALL FOR REWATCHING NOW HAHAHA I love Jesse's terrified face, it is the best :D Wait, is he one of the boys with Micheal Pitt in that tree house? I feel like I remember a curly haired boy there too....

Er...I'm afraid I don't know who Fran Kranz is.

From: [identity profile] moogle62.livejournal.com
YES, IT IS AWESOME FOREVER. I don't remember whether he was in the treehouse or not, but he could have been! Fran Kranz plays Topher on Dollhouse, which is a thing I love so much I can't actually watch very often, and I recommend it if, you know, you want to get to the finale and feel like YOUR HEART HAS BEEN WRENCHED OUT THROUGH YOUR NOSE.

Which you may not, understandably, want.

BUT ANYWAY, DO REWATCH THE VILLAGE JUST FOR JESSE'S ADORBS TERRIFIED CHIPMUNK FACE.

Hahahaha, I will have to rewatch it and tell you if he's in the treehouse or not. Ah, yes, Dollhouse. See, everyone told me to watch it, but I sort of always kinda knew it wasn't going to last to I stayed away from it like the plague. Good thing, too, because after FlashForward was canceled I learned that my heart cannot handle these sort of things; SGU getting canceled hurts so much oh god why.

JESSE'S ADORBS TERRIFIED CHIPMUNK FACE I like you. Can we be friends?

With Dollhouse, it was good, and then it got renewed and they pulled out an AMAZING episode that wasn't aired with the original run of the first season but was on the dvds, and then s2 started with some preeeeetty lackluster episodes and it got cancelled and then SHIT WENT DOWN AND IT WAS UNBELIEVABLY GOOD AND I SOB MY WAY THROUGH ALL THE EPISODES EVERY TIME I WATCH THEM BECAUSE I KNOW WHAT'S COMING. /still not over that at all.

SGUUUU, give me, like, a brief overview? I ASSUME THERE IS A STARGATE. AND A UNIVERSE. THAT IS THE EXTENT OF MY KNOWLEDGE.

(ajhsgfhgdsf that one is fairly pleasing also, let's not lie. I need more TSN icons.)

From: [identity profile] moonlitelupines.livejournal.com
Yeah, I heard this about Dollhouse and it just made me so relieved I never got into it. THAT IS WHAT HAPPENED WITH FLASHFORWARD IT CAME BACK FROM HIATUS AFTER SOME BAD EPISODES AND WAS KJHNJHCVBJKJHFDCVBNJKGFDCVBNKFCXVBN AMAZING AND THEN IT GOT CANCELED and no, I'm not over it yet either. My roommate is in production and she met the guy responsible for canceling it and I was like I HOPE YOU GAVE HIM AN EARFUL but she didn't, because, you know, she's a professional hahaha

I ASSUME THERE IS A STARGATE. AND A UNIVERSE. Oh, you, ilu hahaha. Um, basically shit goes down at this planet that's far away from Earth and they have to use the stargate to get home, but they couldn't dial Earth, so they ended up on a ship, called Destiny. And they have to figure out how to get home and how to survive while they're on the ship. Tensions run high, as I'm sure you would guess. David Blue plays Eli and I love him and his sad face and his genius brain.

(Here, icon and the original cap, which omg I cannot believe I actually deleted from my HD, but thankfully I still had a copy of that SNL ep.

lolol if I ever met anyone from Fox, I'd just be like SO LET'S TALK ABOUT DOLLHOUSE, SHALL WE?? until they admitted they were in the wrong. FUCK PROFESSIONALISM. Unless maybe I was trying to get a show of my own made or something, and then I'd be like "I respect all your decisions, even the stupid ones. Speaking of which: DOLLHOUSE."

they have to figure out how to get home and how to survive while they're on the ship - THAT SOUNDS EXCEPTIONALLY RELEVANT TO MY INTERESTS, I shall check out the first episodes :DDD Is there, like, a main fandom ship? Just out of curiosity, I mean. Leave it to me to ship something ridiculous. MY FIRST GLEE SHIP WAS SUE/QUINN. ALSO I TEND TO SHIP EVERYONE/EVERYONE ON A FAIRLY REGULAR BASIS.

akjshfdgjhs whyyyy tinypic why do you hate me, it's not showing me anything? I have problems with tinypic fairly regularly DDDD:

I have to not piss off the studio executives, because I'm an actor and that sort of behavior does not lead to getting cast haha. But ugh, they chose V--fucking V--over FlashForward and at least FlashForward made sense episode to episode ugh ugh ugh

YAY!!! Watch it! Season one is great, the finale was INSANE AND HOW SEASON FINALES SHOULD BE. Um, I'm not involved in the fandom, but I'm sure the main fandom pairings would be Rush/Scott, Matt/Chloe, and Scott/Tamara; maybe maybeEli/Rush or Eli/Matt or Eli/Chloe or OKAY MAYBE I'M JUST GUESSING AND TELLING YOU WHO I WOULD SHIP IF I WAS IN THE FANDOM LOL Oh, lord, the only ships I ship in Glee is Kurt/Blaine and Brittany/Santana because I mean, c'mon!!!! Hahaha, have you kept up with Glee or did you give up on it when it got ridic? (I totally understand if you did, I think about doing that after every episode.)

nnnonoooooo tinypic don't be a dick! I could try uploading to another site?

UGH DON'T TEMPT ME HAHAHAHA OH DUSTIN DUSTIN DUSTIN HOW YOU OWN MY HEART HOW YOU OWN MY HEART UH UH UH I COULD DEFINITELY MAYBE DO ICONS OF WARDO'S FACE BECAUSE I LIKE HIS FACE AND I LIKE JESSE'S FACE SO IT'S NOT LIKE IT'D BE THAT MUCH OF A HASSLE HAHAHA HEAVEN FORBIDE I WATCH THIS MOVIE AGAIN. asjgdhjsgj I am looking forward to this showwwww. I am mainlining Greek at the moment, and also writing this LUDICROUSLY LONG fic, but after that, I will be all over SGU! <333 Re: Glee: I sort of dip in and out, but I'll probably catch up on dvd at some point. I'm not trying that hard but it's not my fault I need to new head shots and am poor okay! THAT SOUNDS LIKE AN EXCELLENT PLAN! You write screenplays? Have you completed any? That's my problem, I can never finish what I start.

I never got into Greek, my mom like forbade me from watching it and since I was on break from school and home, there wasn't a whole lot I could do about it--this was before I became as internet savvy as I am now hur hur (I'm not savvy at all) but it always seemed fantastic. 1) HNNNNNG
2) ???????????????????

you are like a bundle of delight, thank you for bringing these things into my life!

Also, a degree in Drama and English! That sounds so interesting. I am on a gap year atm after deciding to change degree halfway through my first year, and I'm off to study Film and French in September, which I am massively looking forward to. re: screenplays, I sort of always assumed that's what I'd do, because I always wanted to be a writer when I was little and then I got older and fell in love with films properly, but idk idk, I have had zero opportunities to really explore what film-related thing I want to end up doing because I live in the ass end of nowhere, so I'm really just looking to find that out in the next couple of years, and taking internships and volunteer posts all over the place in the meantime, so. /THINGS YOU DIDN'T REALLY NEED TO KNOW.

MOVING ON.

agfhgsdj WATCH GREEK. I started watching it because I thought it would be this light show I could sort of just watch on the side, you know, and then it took my heart and ran away, and now I am so over-invested with these stupid characters it is actually ridiculous. Why did your mum not let you watch it, out of curiosity?

SERIOUSLY LOOKING FORWARD TO THESE ICONS! ALSO I KNOW ALL ABOUT THE PAINS OF WORK GETTING IN THE WAY, I AM OFF TO WORK IN A COUPLE OF HOURS BUT I JUST WANT TO WRITE THIS FIC, UGH UGH WHY MUST I NEED MONEY ETC ETC ETC.

YOU ARE VERY WELCOME I MAINTAIN THAT JESSE IS THE TRUE DELIGHT NOT ME. The one with the brush for reals makes me giggle EVERY TIME I see it so I needed to share that with you.

Yes, it was very interesting, I spent most of my college career reading plays and talking about theatre and acting theory and trust me, I could and will probably talk your ear off about any of those things, so be warned hahaha. I wish that my school had had a filmmaking/ film program in the arts department because I would have double in that instead of English hahaha I am so excited for you! I love film more and more everyday and I cannot wait to start actually making them so let me know how it all goes because I love hearing about that sort of thing, seriously.

Oh, my mom walked in on one of the party scenes in the like pilot or something and I was hope from my freshman year of college and I think she was worried it would influence me to party more at college--which, lol it's like she didn't know me at all. I'm the girl who didn't drink until 21 because THE LAW TOLD HER SHE COULDN'T and also other reasons that don't really matter to anyone but me. HMM I HAVE SO MANY SHOWS IDK IF I CAN ADD ANOTHER SO CONFLICTED!!!

I WAS TOO TIRED AFTER WORK/DISTRACTED BY FIC (SERIAL KILLER AU MARK/EDUARDO WHERE HAVE YOU BEEN ALL MY LIFE!) BOTH IN MY HEAD AND NOT SO I DIDN'T HAVE TIME TO EVEN OPEN MY FILE LET ALONE CAP ANYTHING AND NOW I'M OFF TO WORK...AGAIN UGH UGH UGH BUT HOPEFULLY AFTER! if you know, serial killer au doesn't suck me in first :P

Talk to me about acting theory! I find it so fascinating, despite never having acted myself beyond, like, being a goose when I was 5.

I'm the girl who didn't drink until 21 because THE LAW TOLD HER SHE COULDN'T - THIS IS BEYOND AMAZING, YOU ARE AMAZING. I don't drink because I just don't like the taste of alcohol, which I am aware is ridiculous, but YOUR REASON IS BETTER!

OH MY GOD THANK YOU FOR ALERTING ME TO THE EXISTENCE OF THAT SERIAL KILLER FIC, OH MY GOD.

Date: 2011-03-31 02:47 am (UTC)
From: [identity profile] moonlitelupines.livejournal.com
Oh, uh, er...spewing acting theory is much harder when unprompted HAHA ANYWAY I will tell you what I told my coworker last night when I told her I wanted to marry another actor (because if anyone is going to get my particular brand of crazy, it's another actor haha) and she asked me, Wouldn't you be afraid of him lying to you because being an actor would make him a better liar? Answer: No, not any more than anyone else, really. Acting is most emphatically not lying. We cannot think of it as lying; yes it is one hundred present contrived, even the "true stories", because am I actually a nurse on a spaceship in the year 2258? No. But what I am feeling and what I am trying to achieve have to be one hundred percent honest and genuine in the moment, otherwise WTF am I even doing? Acting is about getting down to the truth of what is happening to a character in that moment (moment could be scene or even literally one line); even if a character is lying in a scene, they are doing it for a reason and as an actor you must know why that is--and besides, you're not really "lying", you're technically using a lie as a tactic to achieve your goal in the scene/movie. I could ramble on and on about this, but I won't. do not say i did not warn you :P

Hahaha, I mean, I had a sip here and there before turning 21, but that was about it. It was mostly just to appease my peers WHO COULD NOT COMPREHEND ANYONE NOT DRINKING UNTIL 21. I'm not that amazing, really; there was more to it than not breaking the law but that's like heavy RL ish that I don't want to bore you with.

OMG YES SERIAL KILLER AU WAS FUCKING BRILLIANT HOSHIT I DON'T EVEN HAVE WORDS. SERIOUSLY IT HAS SOME OF BEST CHARACTERIZATION FOR A MARK/EDUARDO FIC I'VE READ RECENTLY. Super jealous of her mad skills. Almost makes me not want to write my Mark/Eduardo post-apocalypse fic I'm working on. Almost.

Also I finally finished capping TSN so icon shall be coming soon, hopefully hahaha

This was interesting. I could appreciate the atmosphere even if I don't like the source material. I hated The Village, because it felt like a super-extended Twilight Zone episode -- and not the good ones like Message from Charity or Her Pilgrim Soul.

Thank you <3 The atmosphere in the film is my favourite part of it, apart from the score, which I love. I can totally see why people don't like the film, but it got me at an impressionable age and gave me ~feelings~.

ALSO THIS COMMENT MADE ME WANT TO WATCH SOME TWILIGHT ZONE.

This was beautiful. Inspired me to watch the movie, which was superb. The score was beautiful as well. James Newton Howard is a genius.
