Disclaimer: Okay, right, this is a long one. None of the characters belong to me (Harry and Draco et al belong to JK Rowling, whom I am not; Holmes and Watson and Mrs Hudson belong to Arthur Conan Doyle, or whoever it is that actually holds the right to them these days but who is definitely not me either) and in fact part of the plot isn't mine either, for which you can thank Cormac McCarthy, for writing The Road. Those two quotations are from Shakespeare and Socrates respectively, because I'm not as clever as Holmes. The title is from Blinding, by Florence and the Machine, which I listened to on repeat whilst writing this and which iTunes informs me I have now listened to 194 times. I'm not making any money from this, and basically none of it is even my idea, so well done me!



Oh my god, what can I even say about this fic? It has been a labour of love from beginning to end, even in the ridiculously early hours of various mornings when neither Holmes nor Watson would cooperate. It's been through many different incarnations, and still I worry that the plot runs too exposition heavy or Holmes is not Holmes enough but, you know, I'm pretty much bound to worry about these things. It was written firmly with the RDJ and Jude Law movieverse characters in mind. All my heartfelt thanks and love goes to my wonderful beta onidoko, without whom I could not have coped. I think I owe her my first-born or something. Any remaining mistakes are my own. Also, thanks to Carebear, who has no LJ but to whom I owe a lot, for telling me to stop handwaving and start writing better. And! Huge thanks to tortugax, who created an amazing fanmix for this fic with cover art that made me tear up and a final song that made me cry.

Holmes was my first fandom, when I was, like, 6 or 7 and didn't even know how to use the internet. I wrote a fic in which Holmes and Watson solved a blindingly simple case in the countryside that plagarised the shit out of The Three Garridebs, and culminated in Watson crying in his bedroom after Holmes ~insulted his honour~ by calling him a crybaby. It was written as a play, and masterfully performed by my mother, my cousin and I for my step-dad on his birthday. My mother was Watson, I was Holmes, and my cousin did the sound-effects while hidden in a cupboard. Some years later, RDJ played Holmes and I went mental, and here is this 23,000 word ridiculous fic that is not much more advanced than "Don't be a crybaby, Watson," and Holmes and Watson still own most of my heart.
