So somehow I have managed to post for such a ridiculous length of time that my paid account expired and the judgemental thing on the homepage is telling me LAST POSTED 7 WEEKS AGO in what I consider to be an unnecessarily large font size, and I am made of epic fail.
CAN WE SAY 4 As?
FOUR
OF THE A-KIND
THANK GOD
(and 289/300 in Latin, hurrah!)
I have since dropped English Language, and am hoping to actually go into my sixth form a lot more this year.
I attended an epically good summer school at Gonville and Caius college, Cambridge at the beginning of summer, during which I discovered that apparently undergraduates eat roughly enough for three people each day, having an en-suite student room is awesome and that I would actually like to apply to Cambridge, not Oxford, so that is what I am going to do. This came as a bit of a shock, seeing as I spent approximately 12 years wanting to apply to Oxford, but then I went to Oxford and didn't really warm to it. I mean, it was nice, but I never got that sense of real longing, you know, the one that makes your heart hurt with wanting to stay somewhere, and within about two minutes of being out of the car in Cambridge I just wanted to be there more, and so here's hoping Christ's College, Cambridge, are looking for someone with M.E., not that many skillzors and an ice-cream habit to study with them!
Er, also this summer I have procrastinated endlessly about getting driving lessons (soon! I must have one before my 18th ffs) and been unable to write stuff for the various fic challenges I signed up for, although I am nearly done on that score.
In non-real type things, I really need the second half of season 4 BSG. Also moar Being Human. Preferably soon. ALTHOUGH, okay, how awesome does the BBC autumn/winter schedule look? We've got Tess of the d'Urbervilles, which I really rather like now the whole coursework connotation is done with, and Little Dorrit, and MERLIN, MERLINNNN, which has the propensity to be either really awesomely campily cheesily good or spectacularly bad, and I'll happily watch either to be honest.
Has anyone seen Hellboy 2? I enjoyed it a lottt. Unpronouncable-first-name del Toro is such a good visual director, and his style really makes the sad fairytale/fantasy enthusiast inside me go all giddy, and, like, creatures and big red people going SMASH is always going to be good. Especially with his sidekicks WATERDUDE* and FIRELADY*. YAYE ELEMENTAL SMACKDOWNS.
Last thing: a tad concerned that I need to have done the whole UCAS thing by the 26th September for my sixth form's imposed Oxbridge deadline and I have NO PERSONAL STATEMENT written yet. Whoops. I really need to go read The Iliad (and no more Greek tragedy, god, The Oresteia is just unreadable, except Clytaemnestra is a bit fabulous).
Dinner tiem nao! How have all you lovely people been? Sorry I've been a bit slack on the comment front, I resolve to do better.

Date: 2008-09-08 06:28 pm (UTC)This is very true. I gained like 100 stone. But I enjoyed it.
It is GREAT to hear from you btw!! And well done on your A's results!!! Brilliant stuff ♥

Date: 2008-09-08 06:40 pm (UTC)I really liked 'The Oresteia'.
(Btw, your idea that you have "not that many skillzors"? Is wholly and completely contradicted by the FOUR A's and the 289/300. IJS.)

I need it to be better than Bonekickers (which I found unwatchable) but would be completely happy if it was around the same level as Robin Hood. Of course I'm already assuming that it won't actually be any good but it could always surprise me!
Oh and as someone who at 24 is still procrastinating over learning to drive I say do it sooner rather than later!

Date: 2008-09-08 07:54 pm (UTC)ALSO GOD WHEN ARE WE GOING TO GET BEING HUMAN ALREADY

Date: 2008-09-08 08:22 pm (UTC)Well done on the results! Gonville and Caius was the college I applied to, but they didn't want me in the end, more fule them!
And I agree about Being Human.

SAAAAAAAAAME (I'm utterly sure I'll kill someone. Probably myself.). And I also haven't written my personal statement yet and am tryyyyying to read The Oresteia. :P

Date: 2008-09-09 11:50 am (UTC)I am going to do my personal statement now! (Well, okay, in about an hour because I want to watch Relic Hunter first, but still.)
FIC CHALLENGE DEADLINES HAVE COME AND GONE. OHHHH BADDDDD MOOOOOG.

Date: 2008-09-09 11:51 am (UTC)HI YOU
How is being abroad going? Are you totally a bi-tri-many-lingual person yet?

Date: 2008-09-09 11:53 am (UTC)It's good to hear from you too! I hear you're a Gilmore Girl person now? I have s1, and I've seen bits of 2,3 and the beginning of 4 on E4, but Rory is awesome, and so is Lorelai, and, generally, :DDD

Date: 2008-09-09 11:55 am (UTC)(Yes, I could have made this one comment. Shhhh.)
I...okay, I will just shh about the Oresteia. But then again, I'm not much of a Greek tragedy person. I like the stories, just not the way they're told, if that makes sense? I'm on the Illiad now, which I'm liking more :DDD

Date: 2008-09-09 11:57 am (UTC)Thank you :D
MERLINNN, yes, I am hoping for something near Robin Hood quality. I have never sat and watched a full episode of Robin Hood because it looks like something I could too easily get really sucked in to, and it looks reeeeeeally bad, and I have enough cheese in my life without losing more Saturday evenings (says the girl who is just about to go and watch Relic Hunter. Er, oops?)
I did not watch Bonekickers, mainly because the previews made me want to kick something. Not a bone (d'you see what I did there?)

Date: 2008-09-09 11:59 am (UTC)Thank youuu! This year I have it totally easy though; Cambridge have abolished their second form thing so all I have to do is apply via UCAS and it all gets done for me. Apparently people who apply to Cambridge have been proved to be un-clever enough to be unable to fill out paperwork. THIS DOES NOT SURPRISE ME as I frequently lose an object only to realise I am actually holding it.

Date: 2008-09-09 01:48 pm (UTC)O I C WOT U DUD THAR! (And that's better than anyhting they managed!) I watched one episode of Bonekickers and then I was too embarassed to watch anymore. It was the wrong sort of bad. Not even Hugh Bonneville could convince me to watch it.

Date: 2008-09-09 02:21 pm (UTC)Okay, it is entirely YOUR FAULT if I watch any Robin Hood. Do not say I didn't warn you!

Date: 2008-09-09 03:41 pm (UTC)Being abroad is going well thanks...I have had 2 days of lectures and only one so far has been of the "omg-wtf-are-you-saying-please-slow-down" variety, which is better than I expected! And I technically have been tri-lingual since my first few lessons of Italian, but yeah the other night I was having a conversation using all three (though my Italian was still pants) so yeah, I suppose I am doing quite well with it all. :)
You'll be happy to know that I'm also going to be taking beginners' latin while I'm here! ;)

Date: 2008-09-09 04:59 pm (UTC)I stayed in the first year place: it wasn't that nice from the outside but the new thing had been purpose-built, so all the rooms had en-suite facilities, so I didn't complain. :D
I'm going to be looking into doing an ERASMUS year when Cambridge reject me, and I'm thinking about Italy: would you say Italian was more or less difficult than French to pick up? Well done for allll the language-speaking!
no subject
Date: 2008-09-09 05:12 pm (UTC)STFU, you can do ERASMUS at Cambridge!
And I didn't find Italian very hard to pick up, though obviously it's very similar to French and I've done that since I was 5 years old so that helped. :p
But seriously, I would definitely choose Italian over French if I had to only do one because a lot less people do it so I assume it would be like in my uni where the classes are really small and everyone knows each other and it's all really friendly. And for a classicist there's obviously more stuff relevant to that in Italy (Rome is full of ruins, srsly). And the Italians properly love you if you can speak their language because it's a lot less common for them to be able to speak English. And the food is better. ;)

Date: 2008-09-09 05:32 pm (UTC)I'm definitely thinking about picking up Italian: I'm starting a teach yourself basic thingum my dad has, so I should be able to say hello at some point in the near future! From doing some flashcards with him, I am now able to say the massively useful phrase 'I have a fantastic apartment with a kiosk'. Oh yeah.
Whereabouts are you at the moment?
no subject
Date: 2008-09-09 05:37 pm (UTC)"Ho un appartamento fantastico con un chiosco"? :p
I am in Avignon in the South of France, near Marseille. :)

Date: 2008-09-09 05:44 pm (UTC)Oooh, it sounds lovely. How long are you there for? I think my second choice uni is either going to be Edinburgh or Royal Holloway, so I can go to either Italy or Greece. How useful will modern Greek be in day to day life when I am not in Greece? I do not know.
My other SKILL in Italian is to fear the word for wonderful, or marvellous, mainly because it looked hideously unpronouncable. Er. I am going to WIN at the whole language thing.
While we're here, do you still have a copy of your personal statement on your computer? Is there perhaps any way I could read it? I HAVE NO SKILLS, INTERESTS OR USES.

Date: 2008-09-09 05:55 pm (UTC)You were right about ERASMUS at Cambridge btw, though if you're just interested in doing Latin or Greek apparently you could combine it with a Modern Language and go on a year abroad on the Modern & Medieval Languages course (which is the one I applied for). They do Italian for beginners too.
Meraviglioso? It's a gorgeous word and not that hard once you hear it a few times. :p
And yes of course I'll send you my personal statement! The one I have on my laptop is a draft version but it will still give you a good idea. What's your email address?

Date: 2008-09-09 06:02 pm (UTC)Yes, that word. It is terrifying! The first time I said it, I think I tripped over my own tongue.
Also, oooooh, Pisa! Don't fall over. :p
My email address is choccygirlmeg [at] hotmail [dot] com (take that, internet spam scanning machines! My cunning brackets will see you off!)

I missed my fic challenge deadline too, it was like a month ago. :S BAD ME.

Date: 2008-09-10 09:51 pm (UTC)I am hiding from my personal statement in general. Also, how confusing is UCAS? VERY, okay, I do not like the things it wants me to know, and I do not know. Have you decided whether or not to apply to Oxford? Where else have you decided to apply?
I love my icon! Thank
