I first wrote this for [livejournal.com profile] femslash100's prompt of 'prudence', but I panicked and didn't post it there because I tried new things and I'm not sure about it. I'd like some opinions - good or bad!

Title: Between Having and Holding
Rating: PG-13
Fandom / Pairing: Battlestar Galactica - Laura/Tory
Word Count: 182
Disclaimer: Characters not mine. BSG is not mine. I own nothing!
A/N: Spoilers for the whole of S2, to be safe. Set sometime after Sacrifice but before Lay Down Your Burdens Pt 2. Also, this prompt hated me and refused to let me write what I wanted to and I still find it hard to define prudence. *sigh*

Laura shouldn't be doing this.

She's survived apocalypse, she's ordered executions - she's survived cancer for frak's sake - and she chooses now to have a conscience?

(Breathing, slow, steady.)

She's always had a conscience.

Yes, but there's a difference between having and holding and judging by it. What's best for our survival, she'd asked, she keeps asking, how can we survive? She can be ruthless, was ruthless, but...

Maybe that's what we need.

The fleet can't think of Laura as out of her depth now.

Yes, yes, they can. Perhaps, oh, perhaps they should.

(A shudder and a shudder and a sigh.)

(Silence)

And Tory stands up, wiping her mouth, and Laura puts her knees together, crosses her ankles, pulls her skirt into place.

Do you think I'm out of my depth?

Madame President, to be honest, I don't think you could be.

Tory walks away, knees burning red from carpet rough beneath them, smiling, smiling, flushed. Laura watches.

Laura shouldn't be doing this.

(Silence, silence, stop.)
