"I ran out of ideas, so I put 'jam'."
There is no cohesive structure to this post! Never mind.
I should say, first of all, that Charles and Sebastian are two of my favourite characters ever to, er, charact (what?), and this means that I tend to be a bit stringent on what I'm looking for in a televisual/film portrayal of them. I CAN'T HELP IT. And it's not just in the film, either: this is probably slightly sacrilegious, but I don't think Anthony Andrews' performance as Sebastian in the TV series is as pitch-perfect as it is often heralded to be - I mean, I love him, and his Sebastian makes me cry like a tiny tiny child, but there are times when, I don't know, something's just off for me. I find him almost too upper-class, if that makes any sense at all - I know he's aristocracy, and all, but the Sebastian in my head is a bit more deprecating of that side of himself. WHATEVER, SELF, YOU MAKE NO SENSE.
Anyway. I liked Ben Whishaw as Sebastian in that I liked how his Sebastian dealt with the whole upper-class lifestyle - like, it was what he was used to, and how he was brought up, and how he knew to respond to situations, but it wasn't what he wanted. However (GOD, WHY SO PICKY, MOOG), he was almost too vulnerable for me. Don't get me wrong, I love his little sad skinny face (LIKE A WHIPPET!), but maybe not for Sebastian? I kind of thought of Sebastian as less fragile.
MORE IMPORTANTLY: THE KISS THE KISS THE FREAKING FREAKING KISS. YES PLEASE. MORE OF THAT. Just - just the way they are both being ridiculous with all the different types of alcohol, and then Sebastian leans in, and Charles kind of slightly tenses up and then kisses him back, I swear he does, and then the way they are both just sitting in companionable silence afterwards, MY HEART, YOU GUYS, I CANNOT TAKE IT.
I won't go into the MANY issues I had with this film - for example, no, film people, Julia does not go to Venice - but I will say that if you're making a film, make a film: don't try and cram in everything from the book. It's a film. It is never going to be an exact replica, and it'll be a better end product in its own medium if you you cut stuff. It pains me as much as anyone to see bits I especially cherish from books disappear in films, but, you know, if it's done to make the film better on its own merits, then I think that's fine.
Before I stop talking about this film - because it makes me sliiightly ranty, lol, did you notice - I will say that FNNNNG MATTHEW GOODE, YOU ARE REALLY ATTRACTIVE, AND I LOVED YOU AS CHARLES, AND, ALSO, AJDJABFJKABFKAJB. There was one moment, when Michael Gambon was being faithified on his death bed, and Charles was standing in the corner watching this, and watching Julia pray at the end of the bed, and when Gambon, idk, accepted Christ or whatever it was that he did, and Julia was grateful, just, god, the look in Charles' eyes made me go a little bit floopy and I had to put my head under my blanket for a little while until I could cope with things again.
I ALSO HIGHLY APPROVED OF THAT SCENE WHERE SEBASTIAN WANDERS AROUND NAKED AND THEN HALF-NAKED AND THEN ANGSTY AND SHAKING IN FRONT OF CHARLES. HIGHLY APPROVED. Although, it did take the place, I think, of that amazing scene where Sebastian cries on the stairs, which is one of my favourite things ever, even though it makes me go DDD:
A brief summary of my other thoughts:
- lol Emma Thompson I love you, but you were miscast.
- Michael Gambon, I can't stand you, you are miscast in everything (but I fully expect Half Blood Prince to make me cry regardless of this fact in July)
- GAY FROLICKING IN THE FOUNTAIN WILL NEVER NOT BE AMAZING
- I preferred this Anthony Blanche to the television version, although I will admit that approximately 99% of that is because the film version was REALLY ATTRACTIVE.
- On the behind-the-scenes things, everyone talks about how Charles is this massively unsympathetic character, and I just don't see that. What are your thoughts, internet?
- AJSBKJABFJKA MOROCCO, THAT IS ALL I CAN SAY, EXCEPT THAT THERE WAS ANOTHER MOMENT WHERE MATTHEW GOODE SMASHED UP MY HEART WHEN HE APOLOGISED TO SEBASTIAN, AFGH AFGH AFGH OH MY GOD.
- Oh Castle Howard, how many times did I visit you on school trips? A: many, many times.
- I really, really hated the fact that they made the relationships between Charles and Julia, and Charles and Sebastian go all love-triangle-y. THAT IS WRONG, FILM PEOPLE. To my eyes, it was very much Charles whole-heartedly loving Sebastian, whether he realised it or not, and then, later, whole-heartedly loving Julia. NOT AT THE SAME TIME. ajbdzvkjsdb
In conclusion, many thoughts, not all of them good, Goode is good, gay is pretty.
Also, I saw Watchmen last weekend, which I should say words about, but apparently all I am capable of doing this evening is sitting in my dressing gown, eating chocolate and reading fic until my eyes fall out, so suffice it to say that I really, really enjoyed it and have since bought the graphic novel, which I am in the middle of reading. The main thing I wish to say on the matter is that Ozymandias is about 81273816381 times prettier in the film (OH LOOK IT'S MATTHEW GOODE), and also the spitting image of the Vesuvius Club-era Lucifer Box in my head, and, er, what else? Oh dear, it seems I am going to talk about this, alright, bear with me.
- I... kind of don't get the fascination with Rorschach that everyone seems to have. I mean, I understand it much much more now that I've read his backstory chapter in the graphic novel, which managed to make me cry, well done good works, but, um, I AM NOW AN INTERNET PARIAH. I like him, I just don't love him. CONVINCE ME OTHERWISE, INTERNET?
- AJBDKADBK OKAY THE MINUTEMEN (is that what they're called?) I AM IN LOVE WITH THEM. Mainly because afjajbk GAY GAY GAY I NEED TO KNOW MORE ABOUT THE GAY.
- The opening credits were actually amazing. It was like an instant immersion in this world, but it didn't feel like hideous exposition, and it was pretty - this is a thing that can be said for the film as a whole; it was freaking gorgeous - and SILHOUETTE, YOUR TIME WAS SHORT IN THIS FILM BUT I LOVED YOU NONETHELESS.
- Accidently, I seem to be shipping Ozymandias/Comedian - look, idek, alright? - probably because I find them both REALLY ATTRACTIVE, but what that says about me when one of them is clearly a bit unhinged and awful as a human, and the other one is a megalomaniac with ends-justify-the-means issues going on and a SUPER SEKRIT ARCTIC BASE OF WRONG-DOING is possibly not worth looking into that much.
- OH SILK SPECTRES, YOU ARE BOTH VERY PRETTY
- Voiceover, unf, unf, film/television kink
- DOCTOR MANHATTAN, GET OVER YOURSELF. GOD. Okay, his I-am-blue-and-I-see-all-time-right-now is annoying the crap out of me, I have to say. This may be slightly unfair on my account, but whatever: the Doctor deals with this too, and when he is less angsty than you, you've got a problem.
- I may be writing Adrian/the Doctor. WHAT ARE YOU GOING TO DO ABOUT THAT, THEN, EH?
I'm sure I have more things to say about this, but they have all gone out of my head. Possibly this is an act of mercy for anyone that is still reading this!
Two more things, before I stop eating this carob bar (people who said this tasted nice lied) and go in search of some other dairy-free good:
- In case anyone missed it who might be interested, I wrote a Merlin fic the other day.
- Rec me some fic! Any fic, any fandom you know I like or think I might be interested in. Just, tell me one of your favourites. In return, er, you can name me a character and I will tell you one person from their fandom that I ship them with, and one crossover ship I would support. Go go go!

I totally agree with you re being baffled by people seeing Charles as massively unsympathetic, and also what you say here: "To my eyes, it was very much Charles whole-heartedly loving Sebastian, whether he realised it or not, and then, later, whole-heartedly loving Julia. NOT AT THE SAME TIME."

I ♥ Charles to the point where I actually like Jeremy Irons when he's playing Charles. THAT IS A LOT OF LIKING, RIGHT THERE, fuck off Jeremy Pinkcastle.
no subject
I SHARE THAT SENTIMENT RIGHT THERE RE JEREMY 'I'VE GOT A PINK CASTLE' IRONS
no subject
STILL.
FUCK OFF PINK CASTLE MAN. THAT IS THE EXTENT OF MY SENTIMENT.
no subject
It is an admirable sentiment.

RIGHT, I'M ACTUALLY GOING TO READ THE POST NOW.

- CHARLES TOTALLY KISSES SEBASTIAN BACK, YES HE DOES! (I HAVE SCREENCAPS WHICH PROVE THIS, OH HELL YES)
- Whoa, is Lord Marchmain...DUMBLEDORE??? AHAHAHAHAHAHA
- I too kind of despised the love triangle. BLECH. However, I am totally vidding it to Kanye West's "Love Lockdown" because it is TOO PERFECT.
- BOYS IN LOVVVVVVVVE
- Man, I really need to see the Watchmen movie (er, and finish reading the graphic novel too)! OH STUPID 'R' RATING, HOW YOU SPURN ME AND MY UNDERAGE-NESS
- I would totally read Adrian/The Doctor
- YOUR TAGS SAY YOU TALK ABOUT KINGS IN THIS POST BUT I AM NOT FINDING IT
Fanfic wise, ummmmm, HAVE YOU EVER SEEN THE X-MEN MOVIES?
(ALSO: I'M A SELF-PIMPING HO)
no subject
- AJDKBJFAJB LORD MARCHMAIN IS DUMBLEDORE. COULD HE NOT MAGIC HIMSELF BETTER?
- I am looking forward to this vid! :DDDD
- BOYS IN LOVE IN LOVE FORVERRRR.
-I don't know how he does it, but sometimes Matthew Goode does this thing with his eyes where he looks completely broken and it makes me go all mental and have to put my face into some pillows until life starts making sense again one of my weird, inexplicable fic/tv/film kinks is when someone cries, look, idek; what are some of your insane fic kinks
- I NEED MORE MMMMGOODE IN MY LIFE
- hurrah! I am going to write it, and it may just be pr0ns. (possibility of this v. v. high)
- Where are you up to in the graphic novel?
I HAVE SEEN THE X-MEN MOVIES! I might need some help remembering the names of some of the characters, you know, relating names to faces and the like, but I know the main few! HUGH JACKMAN IS FREAKING HOT.
edit: Oh yes, Kings! I meant to say words and then I remembered this was a public post; thoughts coming soon, I promise! GOING TO CHECK OUT YOUR SELF-PIMPING NOW; I MEANT TO SAY THAT SELF-PIMPING IS TOTALLY WELCOME!
no subject
- MmmGoode will never NOT be amazing! I SPENT LIKE FORTY BAJILLION HOURS SAVING PICTURES OF HIM THE OTHER DAY
- About...half way through? Right after Doc Manhattan goes off to Mars!
OH YAY. If you are a fan of Magneto/Xavier (FUN FACT - I always imagine younger!Magneto looks like MmmGoode), Scott/Jean, or Iceman/Pyro I CAN GIVE YOU LOADS OF STUFF.
no subject
- YOU KNOW WHAT WOULD BE GOOD(e)? If we lived in the same country! And could conceivably go and see Watchmen together and flail at MMMMGOODE! :DDD
I AM UP FOR READING SOME MAGNETO/XAVIER. I never have done before, but new things are good! Bring on the gayyy! No to Scott/Jean, because Scott makes me want to spork out my eyes - admittedly this could be because my friend loves him and won't shut up about him and so I kind of hate him for that as well as the fact that he is a bit of a douche - and REMIND ME WHO ICEMAN AND PYRO ARE?
no subject
Magneto/Xavier is spectacular! YOU SHALL SEEEE. Man, I was EXACTLY THE OPPOSITE about Scott/Jean initially, because I thought Scott was hilariously dorky and endearing (ALSO: JAMES MARSDEN HOW I ADORE THEE) and hated Jean because EVERYONE WAS IN LOVE WITH HER AND SHE WAS COMPLETELY USELESS WHAT. Buuuuut X2 and the reading of Amazing Fanfic turned me around and now Jean is one of my favorites. IDEK. Iceman is Bobby Drake a.k.a. the dude Rogue went out with! Pyro is St. John Allerdyce a.k.a. the one with the lighter who throws fireballs at people and leaves with Magneto in the end.
no subject
ajdnkjabd looking forward to these fics! I like Jean because she is pretty (lol shallow) but also I find her slightly annoying. WHY HAVE SCOTT WHEN YOU COULD HAVE WOLVERINE? ARE YOU BLIND? etc etc etc
help help I have the bizarre need to see mmmGoode cry in a film WHAT THE HELL IS WRONG WITH ME oh godd
no subject
Jean is GORGEOUS that's for sure. Annnnd I kind of really want to watch X3 because of her hair alone, but I have been told that is a Very Bad Idea. WOLVERINE HAS NEVER REALLY APPEALED TO ME, I MUST SAY. TOO MUCH TESTOSTERONE. Unless he is with Rogue. Because they're adorable!
MmmGoode cries in Imagine Me & You, woman! I CAN LINK YOU TO THE CAPS IN THE PICSPAM FOR ADDITIONAL PROOF
no subject
Have you not seen X3? DOOOO IT! I went to see it at the cinema, because I thought it was the kind of film you should see at the cinema - all epic and 'splodey and stuff - and enjoyed it, despite it being shite on all kinds of intellectual levels and crap, BUT STILL. PRETTY. SUPER-POWERS. WHAT ELSE DO YOU WANT? I really really liked Jean in X3, I have to say! It's an enjoyable way to spend a couple of hours! Grab some sweets! ♥
IDEK ABOUT WOLVERINE, he's completely not my type normally (if you overlook all the angst, because apparently that sends me a bit mental) but ajsbdkjajdb Hugh Jackman is. THE PRESTIGE, OH MY GOD, AJBDKJBS. Although, I did prefer The Illusionist, but that's because a) the plot was less horrifically convoluted, and b) JESUS CHRIST, the music was amazing, Edward Norton suits that era so well and so does Jessica Biel, and, also, I love it.
liiiiiiiiiink
no subject
Christian Bale was my preferred Magician Dude in The Prestige because OH MAN BORDEN/SARAH BROKE ME COMPLETELY SOBSOBSOB. And The Illusionist! I have heard Good Things about it, only am slightly put off my Jessica Biel, as I haven't seen her act before. IS SHE GOOD?
Er, he's only crying in one of the caps, but it actually goes on for quite a bit! AND MADE ME CRY AS WELL, OH MMMGOODE
no subject
WATCH IT ANYWAY: IT WAS UPSETTING BUT GOOD!
AND FULL OF HOT PEOPLEThe Illusionist, I kind of lose all sense of perspective and what makes a good film and, er, other people's opinions when I talk about it. It literally eats my brain. Jessica Biel is good in it! Everyone is good in it, apart from maybe Rufus Sewell, but then he is wearing a mustache that looks like it has been made out of felt and stuck on top of his lip, which is hilarious, and anyway his character is an arse. IT IS ONE OF MY FAVOURITES EVER, EVEN IF IT IS ACTUALLY A BIT RUBBISH.
(notice how I re-arranged the order we were talking about things to address ajbdkjabdkj crying akjbdkajbd keyboard smash forever)
edit: also, did you get that email with the Brideshead fic in? Just wondering whether my email is working/I have your address right. THIS SOUNDS LIKE I AM PUSHING YOU TO REPLY, BUT I AM NOT, OH GOD, I just worry about sending things to the wrong people.

OK, WE ARE DOING THIS THE FAST WAY THEN. My del.icio.us! Specifically the Xavier/Magneto tag! Some things are better than others obviously, so REALLY QUICKLY WITHOUT LINKS, HERE ARE MY FAVORITES.
Fear the Rest (Long, plotty, spectacular! Also contains Scott/Jean as do all of these because of the canon-ness of S/J and whatnot, but it's not really emphasized)
Freefall (Retelling of X2, longish)
Mice (How Charles Met Eric! LOVELY. My favorite Xavier/Magneto fics are all When They Were Young stuff, WHICH IS QUITE OBVIOUS HERE)
Manual (Short but with vague sexings)
Chess Problems (One of those Five Things That Didn't Happen to ______ fics)
Curiosities and Stutter (THE HARRY POTTER CROSSOVER FICS OF WIN ADJFK;DAFJ;KAD)
Fragile Bodies of Touch and Taste (FRUIT WAS NEVER SO SEXY)
His Terrible Swift Sword (Also long and plotty, with bonus Wolverine/Rogue! The flashbacks to the early days of X/M KILL ME in this one)
Laws of Motion (How Eric Met Charles Volume Two!)
The Last of the Jedi (FEATURING BONUS AWESOME JEAN. Actually, this one's mostly about Jean with just some background X/M stuff, but it's so worth it)
Smoking on the Bus (ERIC IS A SEXY SMOKER)
His Mother's Eyes (Mostly all about Nightcrawler's backstory and his relation to Mystique, which is very lovely)
Like the Back of Her Hand (Rogue is such a wonderful channel for angst)
Skin to Skin: 5 Things That Didn't Happen To Rogue (AHHHHHHH JDAFKDAJKJK WONDEROUS. With bonus Iceman/Pyro)
First Impressions (Drunk!Charles is the best Charles. BONUS THREESOMES)

I haven't seen the TV version of Brideshead Revisited, but I definitely saw Sebastian as a rather vulnerable/fragile character when I read the book, although I completely agree with you about his attitude to being upper class. :)
no subject
I saw Sebastian as vulnerable, definitely, but not physically looking vulnerable, if that makes any sense? Like, he was a fragile character, but he wasn't rake-thin, or fragile-looking. IDEK.
ANYWAY. GAY KISSINGGGG
(why the hell were you up at 5:40? Had you not gone to sleep, or were you just up insanely early?)
